General & Service Options

The basics about how Fix 'N Repair works — walk-in vs mobile, where to find us, payment methods.

Do you only offer onsite service, or can I visit your store as well?

We offer both. You can visit any of our 4 Massachusetts shops for a quick walk-in repair (Wakefield at 18 Albion St, Watertown at 7 Main St, Newton at 212 Sumner St, or Burlington at 271A Cambridge St — all open Mon-Sat 10am-8pm). Or you can schedule our mobile phone repair service, and we'll come to your home or office for added convenience.

The two services have different scopes: in-shop service handles every device type we repair (phones, tablets, laptops, MacBooks, Apple Watches, game consoles) with no minimum charge and free diagnostic. Mobile service is phones only (because laptops, tablets, watches, and consoles need workbench equipment), and carries a $69 minimum service charge. For most customers, walk-in is the more economical option — but if you can't leave home or the office, mobile is there.

Do I need an appointment, or can I just walk in?

Walk-ins are always welcome at all 4 of our shops during business hours (Mon-Sat 10am-8pm, closed Sunday). No appointment needed for drop-off or our free in-shop diagnostic.

That said, for certain repairs it's worth calling ahead to confirm we have your parts in stock before driving over — especially for newer model screens (iPhone 16/17, latest Samsung Galaxy, MacBook M4), gaming console reflows (PS5 HDMI port work), and microsoldering or board-level repairs that aren't always same-day. Each of our shops has its own direct phone line: (857) 302-2655 Watertown, (781) 960-8512 Wakefield, (617) 992-4003 Newton, (781) 921-3577 Burlington.

How do I pay you?

We don't collect payment until the repair is fully completed and tested. Once your device is working and you've confirmed everything is good, you can pay by:

  • Cash (no fee)
  • Credit card — Visa, Mastercard, Discover (3% convenience fee applies on all credit card payments)
  • Apple Pay (no fee)
  • Venmo (no fee)

We do NOT accept: American Express, personal checks, or business checks.

Important on pricing: all quoted repair prices include parts and labor but do NOT include Massachusetts sales tax (currently 6.25%). Sales tax is added at the point of payment, along with the 3% credit card convenience fee if paying by card. To avoid both fees: pay with cash, Apple Pay, or Venmo.

No deposits required upfront for in-shop work (mobile visits have a $69 minimum service charge). If we can't fix your device, you don't pay the diagnostic fee.

What areas do you serve in greater Boston?

Our 4 shops serve customers across greater Boston: Boston, Cambridge, Brookline, Watertown, Wakefield, Newton, Burlington, Belmont, Waltham, Brighton, Allston, Arlington, Lexington, Bedford, Billerica, Tewksbury, Woburn, Stoneham, Melrose, Reading, Malden, Medford, Everett, Needham, Wellesley, Wayland, Weston, Lincoln, and surrounding communities.

Each of our shops draws customers from its own region: Wakefield serves the North Shore (Reading, Stoneham, Melrose, Woburn). Watertown serves Cambridge, Brighton, Allston, Belmont, Waltham, Arlington. Newton serves Brookline, Needham, Wellesley, Brighton. Burlington serves Bedford, Lexington, Billerica, Tewksbury. Our cell phone repair Boston page has more details on each service area.

For mobile service, our radius is about 1 hour from any of our 4 shops — which covers nearly all of Eastern Massachusetts.

Pricing & Cost

What our repairs cost, how we quote, when payment is collected, and how to get the best price.

How much does it cost to fix an iPhone screen?

iPhone screen repair pricing varies significantly by model. Older iPhones (iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12) are the most affordable to repair. iPhone 13, 14, and 15 are mid-tier. iPhone 16 and the newest iPhone 17 are the most expensive due to advanced ProMotion displays and tighter Apple component bonding.

Pricing also depends on the iPhone variant — Pro and Pro Max models cost more than standard or Plus models because of the larger displays and the ProMotion 120Hz technology. All our pricing includes parts and labor. Additional charges added at payment: Massachusetts sales tax (6.25%), and a 3% convenience fee on credit card payments only. Pay with cash, Apple Pay, or Venmo to avoid the credit card fee.

For an exact quote on your specific iPhone model, call, text, or visit: Watertown (857) 302-2655, Wakefield (781) 960-8512, Newton (617) 992-4003, Burlington (781) 921-3577. Quotes are free, with no obligation to proceed. See our iPhone repair page for more on iPhone services.

Will I know the price before you fix my device?

Absolutely. We always give you the full price upfront — no hidden fees, no surprises at pickup. Here's how it works:

  • Walk in to any of our 4 shops with your device
  • Our technician runs a free in-shop diagnostic (no charge, no obligation)
  • You get a specific written quote covering parts and labor
  • You decide whether to proceed — if you walk away, you owe nothing
  • If you proceed, payment is collected only after the repair is finished and tested

For mobile phone repairs, the quote is given over the phone before we schedule the visit, so you know the price before we're on your doorstep.

Where can I find cheap iPhone repair and cheap phone repair in Boston?

We offer honest, transparent pricing on all repairs — not the cheapest in Boston, but consistently more affordable than Apple, AppleCare, manufacturer service, or Best Buy Geek Squad, and with a stronger warranty than most local shops (lifetime warranty on screen replacements).

If you're shopping purely on price, here's our honest take: be careful. The cheapest phone repair shops in Boston often use the lowest-grade aftermarket parts that fail within months, offer 30-day warranties or no warranty at all, and don't test the repair properly before sending you out the door. We've seen plenty of customers come to us to redo a "$50 cheap repair" that broke within weeks.

That said, you can lower your repair cost with us by: walking in instead of using mobile service (saves the $69 mobile minimum), repairing older models (older iPhone/Samsung screens cost less), and asking about exactly what's wrong — sometimes a port cleaning is all you need, not a full charging port replacement. Call for a quote on your specific device.

Do you charge a diagnostic fee?

No — in-shop diagnostic is always free, with no obligation. Walk in, we look at your device, we tell you what's wrong, we quote the repair. If you decide not to proceed, you walk out paying nothing.

The only exception: for complex board-level diagnostics requiring extensive bench testing (intermittent issues, liquid damage cases with multiple component failures, devices another shop tried to repair and made worse), we may charge a diagnostic fee. If we're able to fix the issue, the diagnostic fee is waived and you only pay for the repair. This only applies to deep-dive bench work, not standard repairs.

Mobile service is different — there's a $69 minimum service charge for any mobile visit (covers travel time and on-site equipment), regardless of whether we proceed with the repair.

My issue isn't listed on your site — can you fix it?

Probably yes. We don't have a separate page for every possible issue, but our techs handle a much wider range of repairs than what's listed online. If your device falls into our categories (phones, tablets, laptops, MacBooks, Apple Watches, game consoles) and the issue is hardware-related, there's a good chance we can repair it.

The categories we do NOT repair: TVs, drones, appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators), and cameras. If your device isn't one of those, just call and ask.

Bring your device in for a free in-shop diagnostic and we'll tell you straight whether it's fixable, what it'll cost, and how long it'll take. If we can't fix it, you owe nothing.

3 Category Three

Repair Time & Turnaround

How long different repairs take, what's same-day, and when something takes longer.

How long does a phone repair take?

Most common phone repairs are completed in 20-90 minutes at our shops if we have parts in stock:

  • iPhone screen replacement: 20-30 minutes for most models
  • iPhone battery replacement: 20-30 minutes
  • Samsung Galaxy screen: 30-90 minutes (Samsung uses more adhesive)
  • Charging port repair: 30-60 minutes
  • Back glass replacement: 60-90 minutes (requires careful laser/heat work)

For most walk-ins, you can drop off in the morning and pick up the same afternoon. Newer Samsung models with under-display fingerprint sensors and newer iPhone Pro models with ProMotion displays sometimes take a bit longer. Water damage, board-level work, and microsoldering repairs take 2-5 business days.

Can you fix an iPhone screen same day?

Yes — most iPhone screen replacements are same-day at our shops. The actual repair takes 20-30 minutes for most models. We keep iPhone screen assemblies in stock at all 4 of our Massachusetts shops for: iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11 (all variants), iPhone 12 (all variants), iPhone 13 (all variants), iPhone 14 (all variants), iPhone 15 (all variants), iPhone 16 (all variants), and iPhone 17.

If you have a less common model or a Pro Max with a specialty display, call ahead to confirm we have your specific part in stock before driving over. iPhone battery replacement also takes 20-30 minutes and is almost always same-day. Walk in any day Mon-Sat 10am-8pm.

How long do laptop and MacBook repairs take?

Most laptop screen and battery replacements take a few hours and complete same-day at our shops with parts in stock:

  • PC laptop screen replacement (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.): 1-2 hours, typically same-day
  • MacBook screen / display assembly: 2-4 hours due to bonded Retina display
  • MacBook or laptop battery replacement: 1-3 hours
  • Keyboard replacement (PC laptop): 1-2 hours
  • MacBook keyboard / top case (full assembly): 3-5 hours (Apple riveted design)

For board-level laptop or MacBook repairs (microsoldering, GPU reflow, motherboard component repair, liquid spill recovery), 2-5 business days at our shop bench is typical. Burlington customers: board-level work is transported to our microsoldering specialist (Watertown, Wakefield, Newton) — adds 2-5 days to that timeline. See our MacBook repair page and PC laptop repair page for more details.

How long does game console repair take?

Console repairs typically take 1-3 business days depending on the issue. Most common repairs:

  • PS5 HDMI port repair: 1-2 days (microsoldering required)
  • PS5 / Xbox overheating cleaning + thermal paste: Same-day or next-day
  • Xbox HDMI port repair: 1-2 days
  • PS4 / Xbox One disc drive repair: 1-2 days
  • Controller drift / button replacement: Often same-day
  • Nintendo Switch joycon drift, screen, dock: Usually same-day

For complex board-level work on consoles (power IC failure on PS5, GPU issues on Xbox), allow 3-5 business days. We give a realistic time estimate at intake. See our game console repair page for more details.

Why does Apple Watch screen repair take longer than expected?

Apple Watch screen repair takes 1-3 hours of bench time — longer than people typically expect for a small device. Two reasons:

First, the screen is bonded to the case with industrial adhesive. Removing the cracked screen without further damaging the watch requires careful heat application and patient separation work — rushing this destroys the watch.

Second, flex cables inside the Apple Watch are extremely small and delicate. The display cable, touch digitizer cable, and Force Touch cable (on older models) all need careful disconnection and reconnection. A tiny error damages cables that are difficult to replace.

Newer Series 7+ Apple Watch models with always-on LTPO displays take longer than older Series 4-6 because the screen assembly is more complex. Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 take the longest due to the sapphire crystal and titanium case construction. See our Apple Watch screen repair page for full details (including the critical waterproof disclosure).

Warranty & Guarantees

What our warranty covers, how long it lasts, and what isn't included.

Do you offer a warranty on your repairs?

Yes — every repair we do comes with a warranty. The length and coverage depend on the type of repair:

  • Lifetime warranty on cellphone screen replacements — covers factory defects only in the replacement screen we installed (manufacturing flaws, dead pixels appearing on their own, touch failure with no impact). Honored at all 4 shops, no time limit on factory defect claims.
  • 90-day warranty on all other repairs — battery, charging port, speaker, microphone, camera, button, board-level component repair, microsoldering work, and everything else.

What our lifetime screen warranty does NOT cover:

  • Cracked or broken screens (new physical damage)
  • Water or liquid damage of any kind
  • Lines appearing on the screen
  • Black marks or dark spots on the display
  • Liquid spreading visible on the screen even if the screen is not cracked (this is still considered damage, not a factory defect)
  • Damage from another shop's attempted repair after ours

In plain English: the lifetime warranty covers the screen failing because of a manufacturing defect — not because of anything that happened to the device after we handed it back to you. If your screen has any visible damage or liquid intrusion, that's a new repair at the regular price. See our warranty page for full terms.

What happens if I crack my screen again or my phone gets damaged after the repair?

Any physical damage that happens after our repair is not covered by warranty — this includes new cracks, water damage, lines appearing on the screen, or black marks. If you crack your screen again from a new drop, that's a new repair at the regular price.

Important to understand: our lifetime warranty on screens covers factory defects only. It does NOT cover damage of any kind, even if the screen isn't visibly cracked. For example, if water gets into your phone and you see lines or liquid spreading on the display, that's damage — not a factory defect — and it's not covered, even though there's no visible crack.

The good news: the second repair costs the same as the first — no surprise upcharge for "this is the second time." We're honest about it. Walk in any time for a quote on a re-repair. If your phone breaks repeatedly, we'll have a conversation with you about whether replacing the device is the better economic call.

What happens if my device can't be fixed?

If we can't fix it, you don't pay the diagnostic fee for in-shop service. We'll also give you honest advice on your options:

  • Data recovery — if your device is dead but your data matters, we can often extract data from devices that won't boot (especially common for liquid-damaged phones and dead MacBooks)
  • Trade-in or sell guidance — even broken devices have value for parts; we can tell you what your dead phone is realistically worth
  • Replacement guidance — if buying new is the right call, we'll tell you which models make sense to consider
  • Alternative repair paths — sometimes Apple authorized swap programs are worth it for water resistance preservation (especially for Apple Watch — see our Apple Watch screen repair page)

We'd rather lose a sale than waste your money on a repair that won't work. Honest assessment is part of why our customers come back.

5 Category Five

Mobile / On-Site Service

How our come-to-you repair service works, what it covers, and how to book.

How do I schedule an appointment for mobile phone repair?

To schedule a mobile phone repair visit:

It takes about a minute. Tell us your phone model, what's wrong, and where you'd like the repair done (home or office address). We confirm the appointment time right away.

How soon can I schedule a mobile technician?

In many cases, we can be at your doorstep the same day you call. We typically respond faster than other mobile repair services in the Boston area because we have 4 shops worth of technicians available across the metro.

If you don't need same-day service, we can schedule for whatever time works best for you — evening after work, weekend, lunch break, etc. Scheduling ultimately depends on our technicians' current availability and your preferred time slot, but we're typically very flexible.

For the fastest response, call us directly rather than emailing — a real technician picks up during business hours (Mon-Sat 10am-8pm).

How do I know when the technician will arrive?

Your technician will text or call you when they're on the way to your location, with a realistic ETA. Unlike larger mobile services with rigid 4-hour appointment windows, you won't have to sit around waiting all day — we give you a specific arrival time.

If something delays the technician (heavy traffic, an earlier repair running long), you'll get an update — not silence. We treat your time the way we'd want our own time treated.

Do you enter homes during onsite service?

No — we perform all mobile repairs in our fully-equipped repair vehicle outside your location. This is safer and more comfortable for you, and our vehicle has the proper lighting, work surface, and equipment needed for quality repair work.

You hand off the device at the door (or in the parking lot if you're at an office), we do the repair in our vehicle, then return the device to you when it's complete. Most mobile repairs take 30-60 minutes, so you don't have to wait around with us — go back inside, finish what you were doing, and we'll text when we're done.

What devices CAN'T you fix with mobile service?

Mobile service is phones only. The following devices need to come to one of our shops because they require workbench equipment our mobile vehicle doesn't carry:

  • Laptops (PC laptops and MacBooks) — bench tools, ESD-safe workspace, microsoldering equipment
  • Tablets and iPads — heat-mat for bonded display separation, larger work surface
  • Apple Watch — microscope-grade precision work, tiny flex cable handling
  • Game consoles (PS5, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch) — disassembly tools, thermal paste application, microsoldering bench for HDMI port work
  • Microsoldering / board-level work for any device — requires microscope, hot air station, and stable bench

For these, drop off at the closest shop — in-shop diagnostic is always free. Mobile service is great for phones (most repairs are 20-60 minutes), but device complexity past that point really does need a proper workbench.

Devices & Brands We Repair

Every device type, brand, and model we work on — and a few we don't.

What kind of devices do you repair?

We repair a wide range of devices across multiple categories:

  • Smartphones: iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, LG, and most Android brands
  • Tablets: iPad (all generations), Samsung Galaxy Tab, Microsoft Surface
  • Laptops: Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Microsoft Surface, MSI, Razer, Samsung Galaxy Book, LG Gram, gaming laptops, Chromebooks
  • MacBooks: MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, every Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) and Intel model back to early 2010s
  • Apple Watch: Screen repair on every model — Series 1 through Series 10, SE Gen 1 & Gen 2, Apple Watch Ultra, Ultra 2
  • Game consoles: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Portal, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

We also do microsoldering and board-level component repair for any of these device types when other shops give up. The categories we do NOT repair: TVs, drones, appliances, cameras.

Do you repair most phone brands?

Yes. We repair every major smartphone brand sold in the US: Apple iPhone (every model from the original through iPhone 17), Samsung Galaxy (S series, Note series, Z Fold, Z Flip, A series), Google Pixel, LG, Motorola, OnePlus, and most other Android brands.

We also do less common brands — TCL, Nokia, Sony, Honor, Xiaomi (when parts are available domestically). If you have a phone that's less common in the US market, call ahead with the specific model and we'll confirm parts availability before you drive over.

For brand-specific repair info: iPhone repair page, Samsung Galaxy repair page, general cell phone repair page.

Do you fix the latest iPhone models (iPhone 15, 16, 17)?

Yes — we handle repairs for iPhone 17, iPhone 16, iPhone 15, and every older iPhone model back to the original. Common repairs we do on the latest iPhones:

  • iPhone 17 / 16 / 15 / 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max screen replacement (ProMotion 120Hz OLED)
  • Battery replacement (newer iPhone batteries with USB-C devices)
  • USB-C port repair (iPhone 15 and later use USB-C, not Lightning)
  • Camera repair (including newer 48MP main and telephoto modules)
  • Face ID repair (when possible — some Face ID repairs require Apple authorized service)
  • Back glass replacement

We typically have iPhone 15 and 16 screen parts in stock at all 4 shops. iPhone 17 parts vary — call ahead to confirm. Older iPhones (iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, 14) are always in stock.

Do you only fix screens on cell phones?

No — we handle almost every type of cell phone issue, not just screens. In addition to cracked screen replacements, we repair:

  • Batteries that drain fast, won't hold charge, or shut down at high battery percentages
  • Charging ports that are loose, won't charge, or only charge at certain angles
  • Back glass (especially common on iPhone 8 and later, Samsung Galaxy S series)
  • Cameras — front cameras, rear cameras, telephoto modules, autofocus issues
  • Speakers and earpieces — blown speakers, muffled call audio, no sound on speakerphone
  • Microphones — others can't hear you on calls, voice memos don't record
  • Water damage recovery (no warranty for water damage repairs, but often recoverable if brought in quickly)
  • Motherboard and microsoldering repairs — power IC, charging IC, backlight circuits, fixes that most shops won't touch

If your phone has an issue we haven't listed, bring it in for free diagnostic. We've seen most things at least once.

Do you repair PS5 HDMI ports?

Yes — PS5 HDMI port repair is one of our most common gaming console repairs. Signs your PS5 needs HDMI port repair: no signal on TV (blank screen even though PS5 is powered on), flickering display, intermittent signal that comes and goes, or a loose HDMI connection where the cable wiggles.

The repair requires professional microsoldering — the HDMI port is soldered directly to the PS5's motherboard, so it can't just be unplugged and swapped like a connector. We do this in-house at our microsoldering benches (Watertown, Wakefield, Newton). Burlington customers: PS5 work is transported to the specialist, adds 2-5 days to the timeline.

Free diagnostic, upfront pricing, fast turnaround — usually same or next day for Watertown/Wakefield/Newton drop-offs. See our PS5 HDMI port repair page for full details.

Do you fix Xbox consoles?

Yes — we repair Xbox consoles including Xbox Series X, Series S, and Xbox One (original, S, and X variants). Common Xbox repairs we handle:

  • HDMI port repair (microsoldering, similar to PS5)
  • No power / won't turn on (often a power supply or power IC failure)
  • Overheating shutdowns (cleaning, thermal paste reapplication, fan replacement)
  • Disc drive problems (won't read discs, gets stuck, makes loud noise)
  • Controller issues (joystick drift, button replacement, bumper repair)
  • USB port repair (won't recognize controllers, won't read external drives)

Most Xbox repairs are quick with free diagnostics and upfront pricing. Same general timeline as PS5 — 1-3 days depending on the issue. See our Xbox repair page for more.

What other devices do you repair besides phones?

Beyond phones, we repair: tablets (iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Microsoft Surface), laptops (PC brands like Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Surface, plus gaming laptops from Razer, Alienware, ROG, Legion), MacBooks (every Pro and Air model, M1-M4 Apple Silicon, Intel models), Apple Watch screens (every model, Series 1-10, SE, Ultra), and game consoles (PS5, PS4, PS Portal, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch).

Each device category has its own page with full details: iPad repair, PC laptop repair, MacBook repair, Apple Watch repair, game console repair.

Categories we do NOT repair: TVs, drones, appliances (washers, dryers, refrigerators), and cameras. For those, you'll need a specialist shop.

What model iPad do I have? What is my iPad model and how do I find it?

Knowing your exact iPad model matters for repair — different iPad generations use different screen assemblies, batteries, and charging ports. Three ways to find your iPad model:

  • Settings app: Open Settings → General → About. The "Model Name" field shows the iPad name (e.g., "iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation)" or "iPad Air (5th generation)"). The "Model Number" field starts with "A" followed by 4 digits.
  • Back of the iPad: The model number is engraved on the back near the bottom, in small text. It starts with "A" (e.g., A2378, A2233).
  • Look it up on Apple's site: Apple maintains an iPad model identifier guide that matches the A-number to the iPad generation.

If you're bringing your iPad in for repair, just write down the model number (A-number) — that's the most precise identifier and tells us exactly which parts we need. Don't worry if you can't find it; we can identify your iPad in seconds at the shop. See our iPad repair page for service details.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

Common symptoms, what they mean, and how to know if a repair is needed.

How to know if iPhone battery is damaged - how do I know if my iPhone battery needs replacement?

Several signs indicate a damaged iPhone battery that needs replacement:

  • Capacity dropping: Check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. If "Maximum Capacity" is below 80%, Apple recommends battery replacement.
  • Shuts off at high battery percentage: Your iPhone dies at 30%, 40%, or even 50% even though the indicator shows charge remaining. This is a damaged or aged battery that can't deliver power under load.
  • Doesn't hold charge: Drains from 100% to dead in just a few hours of normal use, even though it used to last a full day.
  • Performance throttling messages: Settings shows "This iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown" or "Service" warning under Battery Health.
  • Swelling (rare but serious): Screen pushing up, back case bulging, or device wobbling on flat surface. Stop using it and bring it in immediately — swollen batteries are a fire risk.
  • Very hot to touch during use: Especially when charging or running normal apps — indicates a failing battery.
  • Charges to 100% then drops to 80% immediately: Sign the battery's reported capacity is unreliable.

iPhone batteries are lithium-ion and degrade after 500-800 full charge cycles (about 2-3 years of normal use). If you're seeing any of these signs, walk in for a free in-shop battery health check. iPhone battery replacement takes 20-30 minutes and is same-day at all 4 of our shops.

Why is my PS5 overheating? Why does my PS5 keep overheating, and how do I fix it?

PS5 overheating is one of the most common console issues we see in Boston. Several causes, ranked by likelihood:

  • Dust buildup in cooling fan and heatsinks (most common cause) — After 1-2 years of use, dust accumulates inside the PS5, blocking airflow and causing the console to overheat. Symptoms: louder fan noise, hot exterior, random shutdowns mid-game.
  • Old thermal paste needs reapplication — The thermal paste between the PS5 APU and heatsink dries out over time, reducing thermal transfer. Most PS5s benefit from thermal paste reapplication around year 2-3.
  • Liquid metal degradation — PS5 uses liquid metal as thermal interface, which can shift or degrade. Requires expert reapplication.
  • Blocked vents — PS5 placed in an enclosed shelf, dust covering vents, or pet hair blocking airflow. Often fixable by relocating the console and cleaning vents.
  • Failed fan — Less common, but the cooling fan itself can fail and need replacement.
  • Ambient temperature — Boston apartments without AC in summer can hit 85°F+, which exceeds PS5's safe operating range when combined with intensive gaming.

The fix: bring your PS5 in for a deep clean + thermal paste reapplication. We open the console, remove dust, clean the cooling fan, replace thermal paste, and test temperatures under load. Usually same-day or next-day turnaround. See our PS5 repair page for details.

Why does my Xbox sound like a jet engine?

If your Xbox sounds like a jet engine taking off, the cooling fan is running at maximum speed because the console is overheating. Same root causes as PS5 overheating: dust buildup in the cooling system, dried-out thermal paste, blocked vents, or (rarely) a failing fan.

The Xbox Series X and Series S both have aggressive thermal management — the fan ramps up loud when internal temperatures climb. Older Xbox One consoles (especially the original launch model) are particularly prone to this after 3+ years of use because the cooling system gets clogged with dust.

The fix: internal cleaning, replacement of thermal paste, and fan inspection. Most Xbox jet engine cases resolve completely with a deep clean — the fan goes back to whisper-quiet operation. If the fan itself has failed (bearings worn, blades damaged), we replace it. Usually same-day or next-day turnaround at our Boston-area shops. Don't keep playing on an overheating Xbox — it shortens the lifespan of the APU significantly. See our Xbox repair page.

Where to get iPhone fixed in Boston? Where can I get my iPhone repaired?

You have several options for iPhone repair in Boston, ranked roughly by cost-to-value:

  • Fix 'N Repair (us): independent shop, 4 Massachusetts locations, lifetime screen warranty, free diagnostic, walk-ins welcome. More affordable than Apple, with longer warranty than most independents.
  • Apple Store (Prudential Center, Cambridgeside, Burlington Mall): Apple authorized service with appointment booking, preserves water resistance, costs significantly more for screen and battery work.
  • AppleCare: If you have AppleCare+, your repair is covered at a deductible. Worth it only if you already paid for the coverage.
  • Best Buy / Geek Squad: Some iPhone repairs ship to a regional center for weeks. In-store repairs are limited.
  • Other independent shops: Quality varies enormously. Be wary of "$50 screen repair" deals — usually low-grade parts and minimal warranty.

For Fix 'N Repair specifically, find your nearest shop: Watertown 7 Main St, Wakefield 18 Albion St, Newton 212 Sumner St, Burlington 271A Cambridge St. All open Mon-Sat 10am-8pm. See our iPhone repair page for service details and pricing inquiry.

What are the signs of water damage on my phone?

Water damage symptoms often appear hours, days, or even weeks after the actual exposure — corrosion builds slowly. Common signs:

  • Phone won't turn on (immediate or delayed by hours)
  • Screen flickering, lines, dead spots, or color distortion
  • Charging port won't accept the cable or charges intermittently
  • Speaker or microphone sounds muffled
  • Camera focus issues or condensation behind the lens
  • Touchscreen ghost touches (registers taps that aren't there)
  • Liquid damage indicator triggered — iPhones have a small white indicator that turns red/pink when wet (look in the SIM tray slot)
  • Battery drains rapidly or won't hold charge after exposure

If you suspect water damage: power off immediately, do NOT try to charge it, do NOT put it in rice (folk remedy that doesn't work), and bring it in as soon as possible. Speed matters — corrosion accelerates over 24-72 hours. We do ultrasonic cleaning and corrosion repair at Watertown, Wakefield, and Newton shops. Note: water damage repairs are NOT covered by warranty (unpredictable secondary damage from corrosion can show up months later).

My iPhone won't charge — what could be wrong?

iPhone charging issues usually fall into one of these categories, in order from cheapest to fix to most expensive:

  • Bad cable or charger (free fix): Try a known-good Apple cable and a different power outlet/USB adapter. Cables fail constantly — start here.
  • Dirty Lightning or USB-C port (cheap fix): Lint and pocket debris build up in the port and prevent good cable connection. Often resolves with professional port cleaning.
  • Worn-out charging port (moderate cost): After 3-5 years of plug-unplug cycles, the port itself wears out. Cable feels loose, charges only at certain angles, requires propping the cable to maintain connection.
  • Dead or damaged battery (moderate cost): Battery can't accept charge anymore. Often paired with other symptoms (random shutdowns, low max capacity).
  • Charging IC failure on logic board (more expensive): The integrated circuit that manages charging has failed. Requires microsoldering work — we do this in-house.
  • Liquid damage (variable cost): Past exposure to water can corrode the charging circuit weeks later. See water damage question above.

My phone screen is cracked but the touchscreen still works — should I still fix it?

Yes, in most cases — and the sooner the better. Here's why:

Cracked screens get worse over time even without additional drops. Tiny cracks spread under thermal cycling (hot pocket, cold air outside), under normal flex stress, and during accidental pressure (sitting on the phone, dropping it from low height). What starts as a single hairline crack ends up spider-webbing across the entire screen.

More important: cracks let in moisture and dust, which damage the OLED panel underneath. Once the OLED is damaged, you get dead pixels, lines across the display, color distortion, or completely black areas — and the repair becomes more expensive because you need OLED replacement, not just glass.

Other reasons to repair sooner: cracked glass can cut your finger, can damage the touch digitizer over time (causing ghost touches and unresponsive areas), and reduces resale value significantly. If you're planning to trade in or sell your phone within a year, repair pays for itself in trade-in value alone. Walk in for a free quote on your specific device.

Where can I get my Apple Watch screen fixed near me?

If you're in the greater Boston area, Fix 'N Repair handles Apple Watch screen repair at all 4 of our Massachusetts shops: Watertown (7 Main St), Wakefield (18 Albion St), Newton (212 Sumner St), and Burlington (271A Cambridge St). Walk-ins welcome Mon-Sat 10am-8pm.

We service every Apple Watch model: Series 1 through Series 10, SE Gen 1 and Gen 2, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Most screen replacements complete same-day with parts in stock.

Important disclosure: Apple Watch screen repair voids the factory water resistance permanently — Apple uses ultrasonic welding to seal Apple Watches at the factory, and no independent repair shop in the world can recreate that seal. After our repair, your Apple Watch will NOT be waterproof. If water resistance is critical (you swim or shower with your Watch), Apple's authorized swap program preserves it but costs more. See our Apple Watch screen repair page for the full waterproof explanation before booking.
