iPhone Not Charging? How to Fix Common Charging Problems
Most of the time an iPhone that won’t charge is a worn cable or a lint-clogged charging port — both free to rule out at home in two minutes. This guide walks you through the safe checks first, then how to tell whether it’s the port, the battery, or the charging chip on the logic board. Start here: free things to try first
Before you assume the worst, run through these. We’d rather you fix it for free at home than pay us for something a clean port or a new cable would solve.
Try a different cable and a different wall adapter
This is the single most common fix. Cables fray inside the insulation where you can’t see it, and cheap adapters fail quietly. Use a known-good, MFi-certified cable and a wall outlet (not a laptop USB port) before anything else. If a different cable charges it, you’re done.
Look for a “Liquid Detected” or “Charging Not Available” alert
If your iPhone shows this, it has sensed moisture in the port and shut charging off to protect itself. Unplug it, don’t use a hair dryer or stick anything absorbent in the port, and let it sit. If it keeps appearing after a day, there may be corrosion inside — that’s a shop visit.
Check the port for packed-in lint — and clean it the safe way
Shine a flashlight into the port. Pockets, purses, and bags pack lint into the bottom over months, and it stops the cable from seating fully. Power the phone off, then gently lift the lint out with a wooden or plastic toothpick, or use a short burst of compressed air.
Force-restart the iPhone
A software hang can stop charging. Quickly press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. This clears a stuck charging state without erasing anything.
Try a wireless charger, if your model has one
This is a useful diagnostic. If your iPhone charges wirelessly but not with a cable, the battery and logic board are fine — the problem is in the charging port or cable, which narrows the repair (and the cost) considerably.

When the port is fine but it still won’t charge
Sometimes the port checks out and the phone still won’t take a charge. Here’s the part most shops won’t tell you.
It can be the charging chip on the logic board
iPhones manage charging through a small chip on the logic board (the charging IC). When that chip fails — often after a bad drop or a cheap charger pushed the wrong voltage — the port can be in perfect shape and the phone still won’t charge. A new cable won’t fix it. Neither will a new port.
This is exactly where most part-swap shops and national chains stop. They replace the port, it still doesn’t charge, and they hand it back as “not repairable.” We do microsoldering and board-level repair in-house at our Watertown and Wakefield locations, which means we can diagnose and often repair the charging chip itself.
