iPhone Screen Repair: Apple Store or an Independent Shop?
We're a repair shop, so you'd expect us to say "come to us." Sometimes Apple is the right call, and we'll tell you exactly when. This is the honest breakdown: AppleCare+, warranties, parts, timing, and trade-in value, so you can pick the option that fits your phone and your week.

The short answer
Two questions decide most of it: do you have AppleCare+, and is the phone still under Apple's warranty? If either answer is yes, Apple is usually the better deal. If both are no, an independent shop usually wins on time and choice.
Coverage is already paid for
- You have AppleCare+, which covers screen damage for a flat fee per incident
- The phone is still under Apple's limited warranty and you want to keep that coverage simple
- A "Genuine" label in Settings matters to you for trade-in or resale
- You can wait for an appointment slot
Time, choice, or deeper damage matter more
- You're out of warranty with no AppleCare+
- You need the phone back today without booking ahead
- You want to choose between aftermarket and OEM screen grades
- There's damage beyond the screen that needs board-level work
If the independent route fits, here's how our iPhone screen repair works, with every model we service and the screen grades available for each.
Apple vs. our shops, side by side
Apple's details below come from Apple's own support pages. For Apple's current repair pricing on your model, check Apple's iPhone repair page directly.
| Apple Store / Apple network | Fix 'N Repair | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Start through Apple Support: in-store visit, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or mail-in | Walk in, first come first served, or book online |
| Timing | Depends on appointment slots and parts; AppleCare+ advertises same-day service in many major metro areas | 20–30 minutes for in-stock grades (details) |
| Parts | Genuine Apple parts, which can be new or previously used genuine parts | Your choice: aftermarket LCD, aftermarket OLED, OEM refurbished, OEM service pack, or a genuine part you order |
| Repair warranty | 90 days, or the rest of your Apple warranty if that's longer | Lifetime on touch sensitivity, ghost clicking, random clicking, and screen lifting |
| AppleCare+ | Covers accidental screen damage for a flat fee per incident | Not applicable; independent repairs aren't covered by AppleCare+ |
| Settings label | Genuine | Unknown for aftermarket screens |
| Damage beyond the screen | If an issue isn't eligible for repair, you may need to pay for a replacement device | Board-level microsoldering in-house at Watertown and Wakefield |
AppleCare+ and your Apple warranty
If you pay for AppleCare+, use it. It covers accidental screen damage for a flat service fee per incident, and Apple's network does the work. That fee is almost always less than an out-of-pocket repair anywhere, including with us. We'd rather tell you that now than have you pay twice.
Apple also states that repairs by independent shops aren't covered by Apple's warranty or AppleCare. They're covered by the shop's own warranty instead. So if your iPhone is still under Apple coverage, an independent repair means Apple won't pay for problems that come from that repair.
Once the phone is out of warranty with no AppleCare+, that tradeoff disappears. At that point the real questions are how soon you need the phone, which screen you want, and whether anything besides the glass is damaged.
Parts, the Settings label, and trade-in value
This is the part most repair shops skip. Apple publishes how it treats non-Apple screens, and you should know before you choose.
Your iPhone records screen repairs
On iPhone 11 and newer, except the SE models, iOS keeps a Parts and Service History under Settings → General → About. A genuine Apple screen installed through Apple's process shows as Genuine. A non-Apple screen shows as Unknown.
Apple says these messages don't affect how you use the phone, but notes that an Unknown part can lower trade-in value. If you plan to trade the phone in soon, factor that in.
What Apple says can go wrong with third-party screens
Apple lists possible issues with non-Apple displays, including touch problems, True Tone not working correctly, auto-brightness issues, color that looks too yellow or blue, lower peak brightness, and abnormal battery drain. Not every aftermarket screen has these problems, but they're real tradeoffs. Two we tell every customer about: tap to wake doesn't work on aftermarket screens, and an LCD in an OLED iPhone uses more battery. More on that in why cheap LCD screens cause battery drain.
That's why we offer four grades
Aftermarket LCD, aftermarket OLED, OEM refurbished, and OEM service pack. You pick based on budget, how long you're keeping the phone, and whether the Settings label matters to you. We compare all four in LCD vs. OLED aftermarket vs. OEM iPhone screens.
The middle option: a genuine Apple part, installed by us
If you want a genuine screen but don't want to wait on an Apple appointment, you can order the display yourself through Apple's Self Service Repair store and have us install it for a labor-only charge.
- Order the display for your exact iPhone model from Apple's Self Service Repair store.
- Call us when it arrives at (857) 302-2655 to confirm the labor-only charge for your model.
- Bring the phone and the part to Watertown, Newton, Burlington, or Wakefield, and we'll install it.
- Finish the repair on your phone if iOS asks. Apple notes that on newer iPhones, a new Apple display shows "Finish Repair" in Settings until you complete it with the built-in Repair Assistant.
Parts you supply aren't covered by our warranty, so a defective Apple part goes back through Apple. You keep using your phone until the part arrives, so there's no downtime while you wait.
When it's more than a cracked screen
A hard drop doesn't always stop at the glass. A bent frame, a dead display that isn't just cracked, or a phone that won't power on can all mean damage underneath. Apple notes that when an issue isn't eligible for repair, you may need to pay for a replacement device instead.
We repair what's actually broken. Board-level microsoldering is done in-house at our Watertown and Wakefield shops, and our Newton and Burlington shops take those repairs in and transport them. Start with a free in-store diagnostic so you know what you're dealing with before anyone quotes you a whole new phone. Call (857) 302-2655 if you're not sure where to start.
Before you go anywhere
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer if the screen still responds. A screen repair shouldn't touch your data, but a backup is cheap insurance.
- Check your coverage under Settings → General → About. If AppleCare+ shows up there, start with Apple.
- Know your passcode so the screen can be tested after the repair.
- Note any other symptoms like no sound, no charging, or the phone getting hot. They help us find damage beyond the screen.
Our screen repair warranty
Screen replacements we perform carry a lifetime warranty covering:
- Loss of touch sensitivity
- Ghost clicking
- Random clicking
- Screen lifting
The lifetime warranty does not cover:
- New drop or impact damage after the repair
- LCD/OLED panel issues that appear later, such as the screen going black, lines across the display, or black marks and blotches, even with no visible crack
- Parts you supply yourself
Keep your receipt; a text or email copy works for claims. Model-by-model details are on our iPhone screen repair page.
