PS5 HDMI Port Repair: Why There’s No Signal, and How We Fix It
When a PS5 powers on — fan spinning, white light on — but your TV just says “No Signal,” the culprit is almost always the HDMI port. The little port takes a beating from cables being yanked, consoles getting bumped while plugged in, or a fall, and its tiny pins or solder joints crack. Here’s the good news most people don’t know: a damaged PS5 HDMI port is repairable. You don’t need a new console. We fix it at the board level — microsoldering a new port onto the motherboard — which is exactly the repair the big chains hand back as “unfixable.”

Is it really the HDMI port?
Before assuming the worst, rule out the simple stuff — a bad cable or the wrong TV input fakes these symptoms all the time. Here’s how to tell.
Try a different cable and a different TV
Swap in a known-good HDMI cable, and test the PS5 on a completely different TV. If it works on neither with a good cable, the problem is the console, not your setup. Cables and TV inputs are the two most common false alarms.
Check the TV’s input and the port itself
Make sure the TV is set to the right HDMI input. Then look into the PS5’s HDMI port with a light — if the plastic tongue inside is cracked, or the metal pins are bent or pushed in, that’s your answer right there.
Think about what happened right before
Did it stop working after you moved the console, someone tripped over the cable, or it got knocked off a shelf while plugged in? That kind of stress is the number-one cause of a failed HDMI port — and a strong sign that’s what you’re dealing with.
If those checks point at the console, bring it in — our diagnostic is free, so you don’t pay to find out. Call (857) 302-2655.
What actually breaks inside
“HDMI failure” on a PS5 is really one of two things — and which one changes the repair.
The HDMI port itself
The most common by far. The port is soldered flat to the motherboard, and years of plugging, cable weight, and bumps crack the solder joints underneath or bend the delicate pins inside. The console runs fine — it just can’t push a picture out. This is a port replacement at the board level.
Fix: microsolder a new HDMI port
The HDMI encoder chip
Sometimes the same jolt that kills the port — or a power surge, or plugging in a live cable the wrong way — also damages the HDMI encoder chip (the retimer IC) sitting next to it on the board. When that’s gone, a new port alone won’t bring the picture back; the chip has to be replaced too. It’s a more advanced repair, but still a repair.
Fix: board-level chip replacement
Part of our free diagnostic is figuring out which of these it is — because quoting you for a port when the chip is also fried would be doing it wrong.
Why this is a microsoldering job — and why the chains send it back
The HDMI port isn’t a plug-in part. It’s soldered directly to the PS5’s motherboard, so replacing it means removing the old one with hot air, cleaning and rebuilding the solder pads if any lifted, and soldering a new port in place — all under a microscope. That’s microsoldering, and it’s a different skill than the swap-a-part work most shops do.
The big chains run parts-swap shops. They don’t do board-level console work, and console reflows are actually excluded from their warranties — so their answer to a broken HDMI port is to replace the whole console or send you to Sony. Sony’s route usually means paying for a refurbished replacement and losing whatever’s on your drive. Repairing the port itself keeps your console, your data, and a lot of money in your pocket. It’s the same board-level capability behind our game console repairs generally.
How we do the repair on the bench
We open the console and get the motherboard under the microscope to see exactly what’s damaged — the port, the pads around it, and the encoder chip. If it’s the port, we heat it off with hot air, clean the area, rebuild any lifted pads, and solder a fresh HDMI port on so it sits flush and solid. If the encoder chip is also gone, we replace that too.
Then we test it the way you’ll actually use it — connected to a display, pushing real 4K video, confirming a stable picture before it goes back together. Because this is board-level work, it happens in-shop at our Watertown and Wakefield benches, where the microscopes and rework stations live. You can drop your PS5 at any of our four Massachusetts shops and we’ll route it to the right one. Every repair carries a 90-day warranty.
What PS5 HDMI port repair costs
Board-level repairs are quoted after we look, because the price depends on whether it’s just the port or the encoder chip too. The diagnostic is always free.
| Service | Price | Turnaround | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic | Free | Same-day drop-off | All 4 shops |
| HDMI port replacement | $150 | 1–2 days · same-day +$30 | Watertown & Wakefield bench |
| HDMI encoder chip replacement | Quoted after diagnostic | Depends on the board | Watertown & Wakefield bench |
HDMI port replacement is $150, and most are done in 1–2 days — same-day service may be available for an extra $30. If the encoder chip is damaged too, that’s a more involved repair we quote after the free diagnostic. MA sales tax (6.25%) and the 3% card convenience fee (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay) are added at checkout; cash and Venmo carry no fee. All PS5 repairs include a 90-day warranty.
