Where to Get Your PS5 Cleaned

A PS5 pulls air through its vents constantly, and after a year or two that means a real buildup of dust packed into the fan and heatsink — not just the stuff you can see on the outside. If yours has gotten loud, hot, or shuts off mid-game, cleaning it out (and replacing the thermal paste if it's dried out) is usually the fix. We do this at all four of our Massachusetts shops.

PS5 console cleaning and dust removal at Fix 'N Repair in Massachusetts
Loud fan, random shutdowns, or a console that's hot to the touch usually means the internal heatsink is packed with dust.

Signs your PS5 actually needs a real cleaning

Not every noisy PS5 needs to be opened up, but these are the signs that point to a genuine dust or thermal paste problem rather than just a game running hot for a minute.

The fan is loud, and getting louder over time

A PS5 fan ramps up during demanding games — that's normal. What's not normal is a fan that's loud even during light use, or one that's noticeably louder than it was six months ago. That's usually the fan working harder to push air through a clogged heatsink.

Random shutdowns during gameplay

When internal temperatures get too high, the PS5 protects itself by shutting down rather than risk hardware damage. If this happens during normal play, not just marathon sessions in a hot room, dust buildup on the heatsink is the most common cause.

The console feels hot to the touch, even at idle

Check the vents and the top panel. If it's noticeably warm just sitting on the home screen, airflow through the heatsink is restricted — usually dust, sometimes dried-out thermal paste that's stopped transferring heat efficiently.

You can see dust in the vents

Visible dust on the outside vents is a decent early warning sign, but it's not the full picture — most of the real buildup is packed inside on the fan blades and heatsink fins, where you can't see it without opening the case.

Performance dips or frame drops that weren't there before

When a PS5 gets too hot, it can throttle performance to manage temperature, which shows up as stutters or dropped frames in games that ran fine before. If nothing else changed, heat is worth ruling out.

Why a can of compressed air usually isn't enough

Blowing compressed air into the vents from the outside clears surface dust, and it's not a bad first step. But the dust that actually causes overheating is packed onto the fan blades and between the heatsink fins, deep inside the case — air from the outside mostly just moves the surface layer around without reaching it.

Worse, compressed air used the wrong way can push dust further into the fan bearing or blow it deeper into the heatsink instead of out, which can make the noise worse over time. And if the console is a couple years old, dust usually isn't the whole story — the thermal paste between the APU and the heatsink dries out and loses its ability to transfer heat efficiently, and no amount of air fixes that. It has to be replaced.

A real cleaning means opening the console, removing the heatsink assembly, clearing the fan and fins directly, and checking whether the thermal paste needs to be redone. Call (857) 302-2655 if you want to know whether it's just a cleaning or the paste too.

What's actually included in a proper cleaning

Full teardown, not a surface wipe

We open the console and remove the fan and heatsink assembly rather than just blowing air through the vents from outside.

Dust removal from the fan and heatsink fins

The fan blades and the fins of the heatsink are where dust actually restricts airflow — that's where we clean directly.

Thermal paste replacement when it's needed

If the paste between the APU and the heatsink has dried out, we replace it. Not every console needs this — we check first and tell you if it's warranted.

Reassembly and a real function test

We put it back together and run it under load to confirm the fan noise, temperature, and shutdown issue are actually resolved before it goes back to you.

What we check during a free diagnostic

Before we quote anything, we open the console and actually look — how much dust has built up, what shape the fan is in, and whether the thermal paste needs to be redone. If we see anything beyond a standard clean-and-repaste, like a fan that's failing or a port issue, we tell you before doing any work rather than surprise you at pickup.

Diagnostic is free. Bring it into any of our four shops and we'll take a look. Call (857) 302-2655 first if you want to check on same-day availability.

What it costs

We don't post a flat price for PS5 cleaning, because the real cost depends on how much teardown it needs and whether the thermal paste has to be redone. The diagnostic that tells you which is free.

Why we don't post one flat number: some consoles just need dust cleared out; others also need the thermal paste redone, which adds to the job. We tell you the real price after the free diagnostic, before any work starts. All repairs include a 90-day warranty. MA sales tax (6.25%) and the 3% card convenience fee (Apple Pay included) are added at checkout. This is bench work — consoles require in-shop equipment, so it's not available through our on-site mobile van. Call (857) 302-2655 for a ballpark and same-day availability.

Bring it into Watertown, Newton, Burlington, or Wakefield

All four of our Massachusetts shops handle PS5 cleaning and dust removal. Since this is bench work — opening the console and working on the internals — it's an in-shop repair only, not something we can do through our on-site mobile van. Drop it off, and we'll run the diagnostic and let you know what it needs before we touch anything. Call (857) 302-2655, or reach the Newton store directly at (617) 992-4003.

If you're not sure whether it's dust, a failing fan, or something else entirely, our PS5 overheating guide walks through the other common causes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my PS5 needs to be cleaned?
The clearest signs are a fan that's gotten louder over time, random shutdowns during normal play, a console that's warm even sitting idle, and visible dust in the vents. Any one of these on its own is worth a look; two or more together almost always means it's time.
Why is my PS5 fan so loud?
Some fan noise during demanding games is normal — the PS5 ramps the fan up on purpose to manage heat. It's a problem when the fan is loud even during light use, or louder than it used to be, which usually means it's working harder to push air through a heatsink that's packed with dust.
Can I just clean my PS5 myself with compressed air?
Compressed air on the outside vents clears surface dust and isn't a bad first step, but it doesn't reach the fan blades or heatsink fins where the real buildup sits, and it can push dust deeper into the fan bearing instead of out. If the console is more than a couple years old, dried-out thermal paste is often part of the problem too, and that needs a real teardown to fix.
Does cleaning include replacing the thermal paste?
Only if it's needed. We check the paste during the diagnostic — if it's still doing its job, we clean the dust out and leave it alone; if it's dried out and no longer transferring heat well, we replace it as part of the job and quote accordingly.
How much does PS5 cleaning cost?
It depends on how much teardown it needs and whether the thermal paste has to be replaced, so we don't post a flat number. The diagnostic that tells you which is free, and we give you a firm price before doing any work. Call (857) 302-2655 for a ballpark.
Will cleaning stop my PS5 from randomly shutting down?
If the shutdowns are heat-related — which dust buildup and dried thermal paste both cause — yes, in most cases. If the shutdowns are tied to something else, like a power supply or HDMI issue, cleaning alone won't fix it, which is why we diagnose first instead of assuming.
Can I get my PS5 cleaned through the mobile van?
No — console cleaning requires bench equipment and a full teardown, so it's in-shop only at all four of our locations. Drop it off at Watertown, Newton, Burlington, or Wakefield and we'll take it from there.
