Why Your PS5 Overheats — and How to Fix It

If your PS5 is running hot, roaring like a jet engine, or throwing the “Your PS5 is too hot” warning and shutting down mid-game, it’s almost always one of three things: dust packed into the heatsink and fan, the factory liquid metal that’s dried out or pumped away from the chip, or a fan that’s wearing out. This guide explains what’s actually happening, what you can safely try at home first, and what a real fix involves. We service overheating PS5s at all four of our Massachusetts shops, and the diagnostic is free.

Dust packed into the heatsink and fan is the number-one reason a PS5 overheats and gets loud.

Start here: 4 things to try first

Some overheating is just airflow, not a hardware fault. Try these four steps first — none of them mean opening the console, and none of them cost anything.

1

Give it room to breathe

Pull the PS5 out of any enclosed cabinet or TV stand and leave at least a few inches of clear space on every side, especially the vented side. The console pulls cool air in and pushes hot air out — trap it in a closed shelf and it will cook itself no matter how healthy the hardware is.

2

Clear the vents and dust-catcher slots

With the console off and unplugged, vacuum the vents and the two dust-catcher slots on the underside (visible when you remove the side panels — no tools, no warranty seal broken). A quick pass over the outside gets surface dust, but if it’s been a year or more, the real buildup is deeper in the heatsink.

3

Rebuild the database in Safe Mode

Hold the power button until you hear the second beep to enter Safe Mode, then choose “Rebuild Database.” A corrupted database can make the system work harder than it should. It won’t fix a dusty fan, but it rules out a software cause for free.

4

Update the system software

Make sure you’re on the latest system update (Settings > System > System Software). Sony has shipped fan-behavior tweaks in past updates, so an out-of-date console can run hotter or louder than it needs to.

Why your PS5 overheats — the real causes

When airflow isn’t the problem, here’s what we actually find when an overheating PS5 comes across the bench, roughly in order of how common it is.

1. Dust packed into the heatsink and fan

The number-one cause by a wide margin. Over a couple of years the PS5 pulls household dust deep into the heatsink fins and fan blades, where a vacuum can’t reach. The cooling system chokes, temperatures climb, and the fan spins up to a roar trying to compensate. This needs a full internal clean, not a surface dusting.

Fix: full teardown and deep clean

2. Dried-out or pumped-out liquid metal

The PS5 uses liquid metal — not ordinary paste — between its main chip (the APU) and the heatsink. Over time that liquid metal can dry, spread unevenly, or “pump out” away from the chip, and heat transfer collapses. Reapplying liquid metal is a delicate job most shops won’t touch, because if it spreads to the wrong spot it shorts the board. We renew the thermal interface as part of the repair.

Fix: clean and renew the thermal interface

3. Blocked vents or a hot spot

An enclosed cabinet, a console stood right next to a heat source, or vents pressed against a wall all trap heat the cooling system was designed to expel. Sometimes the “repair” is simply moving it — which is why our free diagnostic starts by ruling this out before we quote you anything.

Fix: often free — just placement

4. A failing fan

Fans wear out. A bearing that’s going will get loud, spin unevenly, or fail to ramp up when the console gets hot — and then temperatures spike fast. If the fan is the culprit rather than dust, it gets replaced with a new one.

Fix: fan replacement

5. Heat damage on the board itself

If a console has been overheating and shutting down for a long time, the heat can fatigue the solder under components on the logic board, leading to no-power or no-display faults. That’s beyond a clean-and-repaste — it needs board-level microsoldering and reflow work, which we do in-house at our Watertown and Wakefield locations and most repair shops simply can’t.

Fix: board-level reflow — quoted after diagnostic

The real fix — what we actually do

A proper PS5 overheating repair isn’t a can of compressed air. We fully open the console, strip it down to the heatsink, and clean every dust-clogged surface — the fins, the fan, the vents. Then we clean off the old, spent liquid metal and renew the thermal interface between the APU and the heatsink so heat actually moves again. If the fan is worn, it gets replaced rather than reinstalled.

Then we reassemble and test it under load — not just power it on, but push it and watch the temperatures and fan behavior settle back to where they should be. If the overheating turns out to have already damaged the board, that’s where our PS5 board-level work comes in, handled at our Watertown and Wakefield benches. Either way, the repair carries a 90-day warranty. Console repair is in-shop only — unlike a phone or laptop, a PS5 needs bench equipment — so you’ll bring it to any of our four Massachusetts shops.

What PS5 overheating repair costs

We start with a free diagnostic so you know exactly what’s wrong before you pay anything. The exact price depends on whether it’s a clean-and-repaste, a fan replacement, or board-level work.

Note: most overheating fixes are the $120 clean-and-repaste; a worn fan or board-level heat damage costs more. We confirm the exact number free at the counter before any work — call (857) 302-2655. MA sales tax (6.25%) and the 3% card convenience fee (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay) are added at checkout; cash and Venmo carry no fee. All PS5 repairs include a 90-day warranty (water damage excluded).

Frequently asked questions

Why does my PS5 keep overheating?
Almost always dust packed deep into the heatsink and fan, the factory liquid metal drying out or pumping away from the chip, or a fan that’s wearing out — sometimes just poor airflow from an enclosed cabinet. If cleaning the vents and giving it room to breathe doesn’t fix it, the buildup is deeper inside and needs a full teardown. Our diagnostic is free and tells you exactly which it is.
Is it safe to keep using a PS5 that overheats?
Not for long. The PS5 shuts itself down when it overheats to protect the hardware, but repeated overheating stresses the chip and, over time, can fatigue the solder on the logic board and turn a simple cleaning job into a board-level repair. If yours is throwing heat warnings or shutting off during games, it’s worth getting looked at before the damage compounds.
Can I fix PS5 overheating myself?
You can safely handle the easy causes: move it into open air, vacuum the vents and the dust-catcher slots, rebuild the database, and update the system. But a deep internal clean and — especially — renewing the liquid metal is risky. Liquid metal is electrically conductive; if it spreads to the wrong spot it shorts the board. That part is best left to a shop that does it regularly.
How much does PS5 overheating repair cost?
Most overheating fixes are a $120 deep clean and thermal-interface renewal. If the fan is worn it’s $120–$150, and if the heat damaged the board, board-level reflow runs $150–$200. The diagnostic is free and repairs are usually done in 1–2 days, so you get an exact price before any work starts. Call (857) 302-2655 to talk it through.
My PS5 fan is really loud, or it shuts off during games — same problem?
Usually, yes — they’re two symptoms of the same root cause. A loud fan is the cooling system straining against dust or poor heat transfer, and shutting down mid-game is the console hitting its thermal limit and protecting itself. Both point to a clogged heatsink, spent liquid metal, or a failing fan, and both are fixed by the same teardown-and-service.
Do you fix both the disc and digital PS5, and the Slim?
Yes. The disc, digital, and Slim consoles all use the same liquid-metal cooling design, so the overheating repair is the same process across them — the disc versions just have the extra drive to work around. Bring whichever model you have; we’ll confirm it and diagnose it free.
Where can I get my PS5 fixed near me?
We have four Massachusetts shops — Watertown, Newton, Burlington, and Wakefield. Board-level work is handled at our Watertown and Wakefield benches. Console repair is in-shop only — unlike phones and laptops, a PS5 needs bench equipment, so there’s no on-site option for consoles. Bring it to any of the four shops, or call (857) 302-2655 to line up a free diagnostic.
